“In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.” – John Muir

Life today is often chaotic, stressful and filled with anxiety even in this pandemic.  We are bombarded by technology demanding our attention with its pings, rings and vibrations that insist on immediate responses.

Wandering in nature is my refuge from this barrage.  A tonic to quiet the discord and invite the opportunity for contemplation and perspective.  Walking along a marsh, the reflections of the grass rippling as the river slowly moves past are captivating.  Through my lens, I explore light and textures as gentle movements of water and wind transformed them.  I see a metaphor for our ever-changing lives in this reflective dialogue with nature.

Japanese art forms such as Sumi-e have influenced my work.  Rooted in the natural world, these ink paintings attempt to capture the Chi or “life spirit” of the subject and have a spiritual basis in Zen Buddhism.  In this work, I employ monochromatic color palettes and backdrops of fog and cloudy skies to minimize distractions and accentuating the delicate details or subtle movements.
